What are Root Canals?
Root canals are dental procedures that are undertaken to save extensively damaged or decayed teeth. Boasting an almost 100% success rate, the procedure involves taking out the nerve and pulp of an infected or damaged tooth and then sealing it.
Why Root Canals are Important to the Health of a Tooth
The pulp of a tooth extends from the crown to the root of the tooth and is made up of a network of nerves and blood vessels, all which can contribute to tooth sensitivity. If an infected tooth is not treated with this procedure, an abscess can form within the pulp, which can lead to swelling in the surrounding tissues.
The Root Canal Procedure
To initiate treatment, the dentist applies a local anesthetic to the procedure site. The infected pulp is then removed and the canals of the tooth are cleaned before being filled. Gutta percha, a type of rubber, is used as the filler.
Usually, root canal procedures do not cause much, if any, pain or discomfort with respect to postoperative care. However, if the area around the root canal site does seem somewhat sensitive, it may be due to the placement of the rubber dam, a device that surrounds the tooth during the surgery. However, the discomfort usually subsides after 24 hours. Taking an analgesic should alleviate any distress or pain.
