Porcelain Bridges are Designed in One of Three Ways
Porcelain bridges are dental restorations that not only enhance the smile, but also improve oral health. The prosthetics are used to replace missing teeth that are lost to disease, trauma, or injury. Porcelain bridges can be affixed in one of three ways:
- A traditional fixed porcelain bridge is anchored or bonded to adjacent crowns or implants.
- A cantilever bridge is indicted for use when the abutment teeth are only located on one side of a missing tooth.
- A porcelain bonded bridge (also called a Maryland bridge) is made with a metal frame. Metal wings are featured on either side of the bridge that bond the prosthetic’s pontic or tooth to the adjacent teeth. Typically, these kinds of bridges are used to replace missing front teeth.
Cantilever or traditional porcelain bridges generally cannot be installed until the adjacent teeth are contoured to accommodate the crowns for a bridge. Therefore, you’ll need to schedule a consultation to determine which bridge best fits with your dental needs and find out what the process will involve.
After placement of your bridge, you will be given directions with respect to hygiene. You’ll need to use a threader made for bridgework to floss beneath the bridge. Bridgework can last as long as 20 years with proper oral care.
