The Reasons Teeth are Removed
An extraction, or the removal of a tooth or teeth, may be necessary for fitting braces or dental appliances, such as dentures. An extraction is also warranted when wisdom teeth become impacted as well. Impacted molars, such as wisdom teeth, are teeth that do not completely emerge, and, therefore, serve no functional purpose. Teeth may be also removed if they have decayed significantly, are severely damaged, or are malpositioned in the mouth.
Before the Surgery
A pre-extraction exam is conducted before the actual procedure to go over the patient’s medical and dental histories. All medications and supplements will be reviewed at that time as well. If the tooth being removed happens to be infected, an antibiotic treatment is prescribed before the surgery.
After the Surgery
Once a tooth is removed, the area is sutured with absorbable stitches. Healing usually takes about a week. Medications to alleviate the pain and reduce the chance for infection are usually prescribed at that time.
